Have you always dreamed on taking a vacation to Hawaii? Is seeing the Blarney Stone on your list of things to do in your lifetime? Love the idea of island themed music at your wedding?
Maybe a destination wedding is for you....
Destination weddings are quickly becoming a popular trend with the bride and groom who want to do something that is unique and special. With the average destination wedding sometimes costing less than a traditional wedding, today's brides are seeing opportunities for alternative wedding options that were not there before.
According to "the knot", a couple can fly to Jamaica, stay in an all inclusive hotel, get married and stay for a week in a deluxe suite for as little as $3000-$4000. Obviously your prices will vary based on location, but with the average bride spending over $20,000 on her wedding...the destination wedding sounds like a great deal!
Destination weddings are also a great way to get all your family and friends together in one place. Who doesn't like a good vacation? However, remember to be considerate. There may be some family members or friends who are unable to make it due to financial strains. Make sure that this is addressed from the very beginning.
Destination weddings are typically not a good option for the super hands-on, controlling bride. Most places that specialize in destination weddings will provide a coordinator for you to work with that will help with explaining what is included in your package, help find local vendors etc. However, if you have a local wedding coordinator that you trust, don't hesitate to hire them to help with the details of making your wedding day perfect. It's worth every penny to be able to relax and enjoy your special day knowing that your planner has everything taken care of.
Here are a few tips if you are planning a destination wedding:
1) Hire a local planner that can get to know you and be able to bring your essence into the planning and coordination of your big day.
2) If possible, schedule at least one trip to your wedding locale to make sure the venue is what you expected, you like the caterer, etc. If that is not possible, make sure and get references!
3) Educate yourself on the customs of your locale. Take extra cash so that when necessary, tips can be given. According to "the knot", and my mother, being gracious can go a long way.
